Happy Birthday Beryl.Beryl Gilroywas born in British Guiana, the only English-speaking country in South America, on 30th August 1924.She moved to the UK in 1952, part of the Windrush generation and went on to become Camden’s first black headteacher in 1969.Beryl studied Child Development and then Psychology at the University of London in 1952. She was a Froebel trained teacher, shaping her own teaching philosophy andworked for the BBC as a broadcaster during the 1960s and 70s.In1982 she moved from her role as headteacher to the Institute of Education as a consultant and researcher and practicing as an Ethno-cultural psychotherapist until her death in 2001. In the early 1970s she wrotebooks for theNippersseries- the first multicultural reading books for children. Many of the stories were inspired by the real-life experiences of children in her class from minority ethnic communities most of whom had recently arrived in Britain. She also wrote a memoir, Black Teacher (1976), poetry, essays, and fiction, such as the prize-winningFrangipani House(1986) Boy sandwich in (1989) andIn Praise of Love and Childrenin 1996).Her memoir, Black Teacheroffers a unique first-hand insight into the experiences of the Windrush Generation from a female perspective and is one of the very few books ever published by a black woman in twentieth-century Britain.Black Teacher is published by Faber, with an introduction by Bernardine Evaristo.Who describes the book as:'Full of wit, perceptiveness, humour and compassion ... Ahugely important memoir about 1950s and 60s Britain from the rare perspective of a black woman transported to the colonial motherland, leaving behind this brilliant first-person record.'After her death in 2001 Beryl Gilroy was described as'one of Britain’s most significant post-war Caribbean migrants.’If you don’t know her inspiring story, please read Black Teacher.

Footwear has been my driving passion for more years than I care to remember. In my professional life I have been fulfilled through shoes both as a designer, maker and as an educator. Shoes are complex objects, incorporate, fashion, engineering, and anatomy. They are powerful cultural symbols, revealing much about who we are and how we see ourselves. They are handmade and mass produced, a staggering 22 billion shoes are produced globally each year, forcing me to ask questions about the economic, environmental, social and cultural sustainability of the industry.Desirability is a powerful drug; how can we create better whilst still fulfilling a need for products we desire but don’t need?As a footwear community, how can we hold authentic conversation aligning our values and and actions to convey the complexities of the design, manufacture and disposal of shoes? What lessons can we learn across disciplines, sectors and regions to work co-operatively?As founder of Global Footwear Future Coalition (GFFC) I have brought together people with diverse perspectives but a shared ambition to issue a call to action to our footwear community to develop actionable initiatives to future proof our industry.GFFC Research & Development Symposium Day 9th Oct 2024, LondonCredits: Image Darla Gilroy- Shoe Eva Hau

I am thrilled that Fashion Bags & Accessories is now published in China.Accessories are a constant force driving innovation, creative design, and new product categories. More than this, they are cultural markers of societal change, and indicators of both individual style and group identity. Even the way we carry them reveals our social history, status, and values.Fashion Bags & Accessories explores the history of fashion bags and related accessories, through different perspectives and approaches to design, product development, technological innovation, and materials development. The book documents manufacture through traditional craft-making and contemporary digital manufacturing process to offer insights into this fascinating of product categories. Combining fashion, product design, engineering and anthropology, their ability to transform appearance continues to fascinated me.A heartfelt thank you to everyone who inspired me to write the book and supported this journey. I am incredibly grateful

I interviewed Alexandra Klimek and featured her brand in my book, Fashion Bags and Accessories. Her passion for good design coupled with craft excellence and commitment to producing bags destined to become treasured heirlooms, is a refreshing approach to sustainability. Brilliant to see her brand showcased at Fenwick during London Design Week.
