Joshua Bassett's Latest TikTok is a Lighthearted Joke Regarding His Rumored Relationship With Olivia Rodrigo (2024)

It's hard to believe it's been over a year since Olivia Rodrigo's song "Drivers License" and the drama surrounding it completely took over our lives. For a while, it seemed like all anyone could talk about was the alleged love triangle between Olivia, Joshua Bassett, and Sabrina Carpenter and, honestly, we’re still not completely over everything that went down. So, let's check in and see how Olivia and Joshua are doing now.

When Olivia dropped her song "Deja Vu" in April 2021, fans speculated that it was about Joshua, but he took to Instagram to praise Olivia on the song after it came out. "SUUUUUUPER late on this but I love this song so much," Joshua wrote. "The world better watch out for the album!!!!!"

However, it's not clear how things were going between the pair following the release of Olivia's third SOUR single, "Good 4 U." Like her other two tracks, fans were pretty convinced this one was also about Joshua, thanks to lyrics like, "Well, good for you, I guess you moved on really easily / You found a new girl and it only took a couple weeks."

Shortly after "Good 4 U" dropped, Olivia and Joshua released a duet, which premiered during the first episode of season 2 of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. They played a couple on the show, so that means they were able to put their past drama behind them for season 2 and work together on set.

Throughout 2021, Joshua made several choices to avoid drama. In February, the singer announced that a duet with Sabrina called "We Both Know" would not be featured on his debut EP as originally planned. "I didn't want my EP to be overshadowed by some other narrative that people were trying to make," Joshua told Billboard.

In March 2021, Olivia claimed that she didn't write songs about Sabrina because she "didn't know her," and later in August of that year, she spoke up about the narrative regarding the love triangle in an interview for Variety's Power of Young Hollywood issue. The "Good 4 U" singer admitted she didn't think her music would warrant the response that it did. "I just remember [everyone being] so weird and speculative about stuff they had no idea about," she said. "I don't really subscribe to hating other women because of boys. I think that's so stupid, and I really resent that narrative that was being tossed around."

In a June 2021 interview with GQ, Joshua addressed his stance on Olivia and how the drama affected his life. "It sort of felt like a losing battle… If I try and defend myself in any way, it just felt impossible," he told the outlet. He also admitted that "Olivia hasn't spoken to [him] since 'Drivers License' came out" and that he received a ton of death threats online around the same time he was hospitalized due to a near-death experience.

Joshua finally broke his silence and released an EP featuring three new songs that detailed his side of... well, everything, in December 2021. While"Set Me Free" outlines the tumultuous year he had between his hospitalization and the backlash he faced, "Crisis" seemingly called out Olivia for her lack of interference when fans sent him hate after the release of her album, SOUR. "And if you get to tell your truth / Then so do I," he sings on the track.

Fast forward to March 2022, when Olivia publicly commented on the matter for the first time outside of her music during an interview on The Drew Barrymore Show. Most of the songs on SOUR were inspired by Olivia's heartbreak from her reported relationship with Joshua, and she opened up about her growth since then.

"A quote you said — I burst into tears, oh God. 'Heartbreak is a two-way street,'" Drew said in reference to a scene from Olivia's Disney+ film, Driving Home 2 U, where she discusses her song, "Favorite Crime."

"I just remember going through that awful heartbreak and feeling so responsible for it too in a way," Olivia said. "Like, you can blame someone else and be like, 'Oh I hate that you did that to me.' But when you really think about it, you put yourself in a position to be hurt and nobody's perfect, and you must have done things wrong in that relationship too."

"I think that's a big part of forgiving another person in a breakup, is forgiving yourself too," she continued.

When she was releasing songs post-breakup, Olivia said that she felt "everything [she] did was bad" and owned that she wasn't faultless in the relationship. "I just remember being like, 'Oh I could do the worst thing and people could say that I did an amazing thing,' so how will I know if I'm actually doing a good job?"

Upon the release of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series season 3, Olivia celebrated her official departure from the Disney+ show by showing up to the premiere on July 27, 2022. She was all smiles on the red carpet and even posed with her rumored ex, Joshua, while throwing up peace signs.

It seems that things have been all good between the former co-stars since then. Joshua not only released a new EP, Sad Songs in a Hotel Room, on September 23 but is currently working on his debut album and filming season 4 of HSM:TM:TS. In his downtime, he posts funny clips to TikTok and interacts with fans on Discord. On October 11, 2022, he posted a video using a viral alphabet filter that randomly generates a letter when users tap their screens. In the post, he said, "First letter is the love of my life," and as he tapped, the letter "O" appeared on his screen.

He then jokingly tapped again, saying "Second letter is the love of my life. Alright, 'Q,' I'll take it." Fans seemed to have taken the lighthearted joke well as they flooded his comments section with responses. TikTok's official account on the app wrote "josh-" while another fan said "the first letter is a paid actor." Another user chimed in, writing "YOU DID NOT," and even influencer Tana Mongeau wrote, "i can’t believe i watched this for free."

Olivia has yet to weigh in on the joke.
