enjoyable for the first two hours or so as a medieval hiss-the-British western, but it goes into battle overkill. Winner of five Academy Awards including best picture and director. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences Samuel Goldwyn Theater, 8949 Wilshire Beverly Hills. 7:30 p.m. (310) 247-3600.

Chicago (2002). Rob Oscar-winning film version of the 1975 musical first staged by Bob Fosse stars Catherine Zeta-Jones, Zellweger and Richard Gere in the time of bootleggers and tommy guns. A quarter of a century later, ostensible cynicism, at least as interpreted by Marshall, who also did the choreography for the film, seems quaintly earnest. Denuded of satire, the musical now comes across as another charming, if creaky, theatrical contrivance. With Queen Latifah and John C.

(323) 466-FILM. Limelight (1952). In this masterpiece, Charlie Chaplin takes a sentimental backstage story of a budding ballerina (Claire Bloom) is suffering from psychosomatic paralysis but isrestored to health by an elderly clown (Chaplin) and transforms it into an incomparable, profoundly moving portrait of the artist as an old man. (310) 206-8013. Network (1976). An all-out assault on the evils of commercial television. At the symbolic center of this savage satire is the late Peter Finch as the elder statesman of TV newscasters who has been fired and who announces that going to blow his brains out on camera. This film overreaches at times, most notably in an affair with an on-the-way-out news executive William Holden and super-ambitious Faye Dunaway.

CSUN Cinematheque, Cal State Northridge, Manzanita Hall, 18111 Nordhoff Northridge. 9:15 p.m. www.CSUN cinematheque.com 677-3192. Rififi (1955). One of the great crime thrillers, the benchmark all succeeding heist films have been measured against, no musty museum piece but a driving, compelling piece of work, redolent of the air of human frailty and fatalistic doom.

Directed by expatriate American Jules Dassin. And, Pepe le Moko (1937). An acknowledged classic of doomed romanticism and atmospheric fatalism, this French film was such a hit on its release that Hollywood promptly remade it as and kept the original off U.S. screens for more than four years. Directed by Julien Duvivier, it featured the iconic actor Jean Gabin in one of his signature roles and intoxicated nearlyeveryone who saw it.

New Beverly Cinema, 7165 Beverly L.A. 7:30 p.m. (323) 938-4038. Roman Holiday (1953). One of the ultimate princess-and-commoner romantic com- edies, with suave reporter Gregory Peck taking gamin princess Audrey Hepburn on a Roman whirl.

This was a Frank Capra project that William Wyler picked up; he gives it a cooler, more astringent touch. It has a bittersweet polish and the locations and cast (including Eddie Albert as randy photographer buddy) are wonderful. With Designing Women (1950). Bing Theater at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, 5905 Wilshire L.A. 7:30 p.m.

www.CSUNcinematheque. com (818) 677-3192. Speed (1994). A crackerjack action film with an intriguing premise: SWAT team stalwart Keanu Reeves must keep a Santa Monica bus from slowing down or it will explode. Nothing here been done before, but first-time director Jan De Bont and company make it feel fresh and exciting.

Discussion follows with de Bont. ArcLight Cinemas, 6360 Sunset Hollywood. 7:30 p.m.(323) 464-4226. www. arclightcinemas.com Teknolust (2002).

Lynn Hershman jaunty, amusing romantic sci-fi comedy about a mousy San Francisco biogeneticist cleverly named Rosetta Stone (Tilda Swinton) who has devised a way to replicate herself as three glamour girls, Ruby, Marine and Olive high intellect, low-budget fare shot in high-definition digital in rich, clear color. Swinton is beguiling, and the film deserves amore accessible time slot. Sunset 5, 8000 Sunset West Hollywood. midnight. (323) 848-3500.

Now Playing Films considered especially noteworthy are designated with a Also included: running time and ratings, followed by Times guidelines about possibly objectionable content. American Splendor This sweet-and-sour independent movie traces the tough, low- rent times of one Harvey Pekar file clerk, jazz aficionado, curmudgeon supreme, friend of comic-book legend Robert Crumb and nemesis of late-night host David Letterman. For the last three decades, the Cleveland native and various illustrators have collaborated on a mordantly amusing comic, also known as that details his encounters with f*ckless women, boring jobs, illness and his own anguish. Most comic books are about supermen battling evil; are about a deeply ordinary man facing down a more familiar devil the horror of everyday life. Pekar is played with lyrical desperation by Paul Giamatti, whose performance is so good that it almost makes up for everything been lost in translation.

Shari Springer Berman and Robert Pulcini, the husband-and-wife team who directed and co- wrote the film, mix a gently fictionalized story with talking-head interviews, primarily with the real Pekar and some of the people who appear in his comics. Along with Giamatti, the interviews are the best part of the movie, but gummed up by the pseudo-Brechtian diddling. (M.D., Aug. 15) (1:41) for language. (Selected theaters) Anything Else Woody Allen has wisely opted out of playing the romantic lead in his latest film.

Modestly conceived and affably low- key, stars Jason Biggs as Jerry Falk, a comedy writer head over heels in love with a f*ckless young actress winningly played by Christina Ricci. As Amanda, Ricci flounces about in various states of undress in front of camera, but rarely shares the same frame with the director, much less a roll in the hay. This is welcome news, not just because the sight of young women throwing themselves at Allen in movie after movie has strained credulity and critical patience, but also because it signals a necessary change of pace for the filmmaker. (M.D., Sept. 19) (1:48) for a scene of drug use and some sexual references.

(Academy Cinemas, Pasadena) Bonhoeffer Aremarkably clear and concise, as well as deeply moving and thought-provoking, documentary by Martin Doblmeier on the life and times of German theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer and his outspoken and dedicated opposition to Nazism and concern for the plight of the Jews. speeches and writings have had an enduring impact on the role of the church in social activism and the cause of the ecumenical movement. (K.Th., Oct. 10) (1:30) Unrated. Too intense and complex for small children.

(Laemmle Music Hall, Beverly Hills; Laemmle Fallbrook 7, West Hills) Bubba Ho-Tep Lame spoof in which Elvis Presley (Bruce Campbell), still alive but using a walker due to a bad hip, and his Texas rest home pal (Ossie Davis), who believes himself to be JFK, join forces to defeat an Egyptian mummy, inadvertently escaped from his coffin, roaming the countryside in search of souls to devour. Campbell and Davis are more than game, but not nearly enough going on to make this movie the outrageous fun it means to be. (K.Th., Oct. 3) (1:32) for language, sexual content and brief violent images. (Selected theaters) Cabin Fever Asoggy horror movie in which five college kids, in retreating to a woodland cabin, embark on a gruesome nightmare.

But rather than steep his story in dread, ideas or something anything fresh and different, first-time director Eli Roth just pours on the blood, along with some recycled surrealism and plenty of giddy movie allusions. (M.D., Sept. 12) (1:34) for strong violence and gore, sexuality, language and brief drug use. Casa de los Babys Six ready-to-adopt American women, hunkered down in a south-of-the-border hotel that is nicknamed in a charming bit of cross-cultura- lese de Los are the main focus of John ambitious new film. Sayles is gifted enough to make all these individuals at least of peripheral interest, and is not without its fine moments, including ones that give some performers the best scenes of their careers.

The difficulty the film has is that its all-important balance, the equilibrium that has to be maintained between the dramatic and didactic, is not what it should be. The personalities tend to become types rather than people, representatives of classes and points of view more than individual human beings. With Lili Taylor, Mary Steenburgen, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Susan Lynch, Daryl Hannah, Marcia Gay Harden, Rita Moreno and Vanessa Martinez. (K.Tu., Sept. 19) (1:35) for some language and brief drug use.
