Oopsies. It may be Fashion’s Biggest Night, but Met Gala wardrobe malfunctions are bound to happen almost every year.
It’s officially known as the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Benefit, but it’s colloquially called The Met Gala. The event is held annually on the first Monday in May, the gala sees celebrities, designers, and fashion insiders gather to raise money for the museum’s Costume Institute. But it’s not just about raising funds; it’s also about showing off some of the wildest, most creative, and stunning outfits you’ve ever seen.
Each year, there’s a different theme which sets the tone for the entire evening. Past themes have ranged from “Heavenly Bodies: Fashion and the Catholic Imagination” to “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” giving guests the chance to get really imaginative with their red carpet looks. Who could forget Rihanna’s jaw-dropping yellow Guo Pei gown from 2015 with the massive train that practically took over the red carpet? Or Lady Gaga’s over-the-top, multi-layered pink ensemble from 2019’s camp theme?
But even with the over the top costumes and dresses, even one singular moment can change the night. And unlike the fake Jason Derulo meme of him falling down the stairs, some celebs have had bad luck. Here are some of Met Gala malfunctions we can’t forget about.
Met Gala Wardrobe Malfunctions
Kim Kardashian (2024)
At the 2023 Met Gala celebrating The Life of Karl Lagerfeld, Kim Kardashian wore a dress with 50,000 pearls. Schiaparelli designed the dress and by the end of the night, the pearls seemed to fall apart at the bottom. “I wanted pearls,” Kim said on the red carpet. I thought,What is more Karl?You know, the iconic Chanel pearls is what I always thought of. So we wanted to just be dripping in pearls.” She also said, “This year, I just wanted to feel glamorous. I really didn’t feel the pressure. I just wanted to have a good time. I took a shot before I came with my sisters.”
Chloe Fineman (2023)
When she was hosting the Met Gala red carpet livestream, Saturday Night Live’s Chloe FIneman admitted that she might have had a wardrobe malfunction on air. “There might be a minor tear somewhere but I’m not going to tell you where,” the 34-year-old comedian said. “It’s hard to sit in traffic in a corset. It’s really a challenge.”
Nicki Minaj (2022)
For 2022’s Met Gala, Nicki Minaj appeared in a customBurberry dress designed by Riccardo Tisci. Though one thing was very obviously wrong with the dress. “The only unplanned thing about my look is that my boobs [are] popping out,” she said. “Because they made my cup size a little small.”
She later joked, “Enjoy these titt*es, because you won’t ever see them again.”
Katy Perry (2022)
In a video taken by Derek Blasberg, Katy Perry got her shoe stuck in a vent at the 2022 Met Gala. In the background, she panics, “Oh no, oh no!”
Kristen Stewart (2021)
A Chanel star, Kristen Stewart tried to make her tablemates feel welcome at their first Met Gala, but had a horrifying realization.”So I go to the Met ball and there’s a new set of kids at the Chanel table,” Stewart recalled in an interview withPeople.“There was a beautiful young tennis player [Emma Raducanu] and a young actress [from theGossip Girlremake, Whitney Peak].”
“I’m talking to them, saying, ‘Welcome, I’ve done this a couple times,’ and they look like I’m scaring them. I look down, and literally my [nipple] is in their faces. I was like, ‘Okay, sorry, I’ll put that away now,'” she says.
Kylie Jenner (2018)
Kylie Jenner revealed that her 2018 Met Gala look designed by Alexander Wang had a last minute change. “Fun fact: this dress wasn’t supposed to have a zipper but it ripped as I was squeezing into it so we added it on the way out the door… but it worked out and I loved it,” she wrote on her Instagram comment alongside a heart emoji.
Selena Gomez (2018)
In 2018, Selena Gomez didn’t have a problem with a dress, but with her self-tanner. She told Vogue, “I was getting ready, and we wanted to add some color. So [I] put on some of this tanning lotion, and it looked really beautiful and very even. As the evening kept going on, it was getting a little darker and darker, and I didn’t notice it. I’m at the Met Gala — basically one of the most prestigious, beautiful events — and I’m walking, trying to look all beautiful, and I look at a photo of myself when I sit down, and I am completely orange.”
Anne Hathaway (2014)
One sneeze is all it takes. Anne Hathaway had an unfortunate accident at the Met Gala in 2014. She recalled on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert, “I was about a block away from the Met and I was like, ‘Wow, this is ama—’ I sneezed and my dress split. Like, just straight up split open.”
Hayden Panetierre (2014)
Not a Cinderella moment, but probably the opposite. Hayden Panettiere almost took the fall while going up the Met Museum steps.
Rita Ora (2014)
Rita Ora accidentally flashed the 2014 Met Gala red carpet.
