is an art collection worth an estimated $45 billion, including, of course, the most famous portrait ever created, the mona lisa. we'll take you on a full tour a little later this morning. >> while we're on the subject of female icons, let's talk about katie ledecky. she once again proved while she is one of the greatest of all time, just dominating the field in her signature event to win the eighth gold medal of her career, breaking her own olympic record in the process. so we'll hear from her and catch you up on all the action in just a moment. but let us get started, guys, with the race for the white house and the fallout over donald trump's comments at a gathering of black journalists. nbc garrett haake has the very latest. garrett, good morning to you. >> reporter: hey, hoda, good morning. and whatever message donald trump had hoped to send to african-american voters in his appearance at a black journalism conference yesterday in chicago has been overwhelmed by the backlash he now faces instead, for questioning the

racial identity of vice president kamala harris, suggesting that harris, who's a child of indian and jamaican immigrants, only recently, quote, happened to turn black. this morning, reaction pouring in as former president trump, who came to this conference of journalists to court black voters, questioned vice president harris' racial identity. >> she was only promoting indian heritage. i didn't know she was black, until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn black. and now she wants to be known as black. so i don't know. is she indian or is she black? i respect either one, but she obviously doesn't. because she was indian all the way, and all of a sudden she made a turn and she went -- she became a black person -- >> just to be clear, sir, do you believe -- >> i think that somebody should look into that. ♪♪ >> reporter: overnight in houston, harris, briefly responding at a convention for historically black sorority. >> it was the same old show. the divisiveness and the disrespect. and let me just say, the american people deserve better. >> reporter: the former

president has been aiming to win over more black voters, a crucial part of the democratic coalition, for months. perhaps under pressure from the excitement building around harris, trump agreed to the interview with the storied national association of black journalists. the organization itself facing controversy ahead of the interview, which turned contentious from the very first question. >> i want to start by addressing the elephant in the room, sir. a lot of people did not think it was appropriate for you to be here today. you have pushed false claims about some of your rivals, from nikki haley to former president barack obama, saying that they were not born in the united states, which is not true. you have told four congresswomen of color who were were mesh citizens to go back to where they came from. you have used words like animal and rabid to describe black attorneys. you have called black journalists, that the questions they ask are stupid and racist. you've had dinner with a white supremacist at your mar-a-lago resort. so my question, sir, now that

you are asking black supporters to vote for you, why should black voters trust you after you have used language like that? >> well, first of all, i don't think i've ever been asked a question so -- in such a horrible manner. i think it's disgraceful that i came here in good spirit. i love the black population of this country. i've done so much for the black population of this country. >> reporter: the former president still making his case. >> i have been the best president for the black population since abraham lincoln. >> reporter: trump has since attacked the moderators of that event as, quote, rude and nasty, and his allies argued that he looked strong by facing tough questions, but his controversial answers have left even many other republicans frustrated as the party continues to struggle to recalibrate to face kamala harris and not joe biden in november. hoda? >> all right. garrett haake for us there at the capitol. garrett, thank you.

garrett, thank you. also this morning, we are learning more about the plea agreements that will allow the mastermind of the 9/11 terror attacks and two of his accomplices to avoid the death penalty. it's a decision that is not sitting well with some of the families of the victims. nbc's chief foreign affairs correspondent andrea mitchell with the details this morning. andrea, good morning. >> good morning, savannah. this is a major development. it comes almost two decades after the attacks on the world trade center and the pentagon. pentagon officials say the mastermind, khalid sheikh mohammad, and two other top al qaeda operatives will plead guilty to charges as early as next week at the u.s. naval base in guantanamo bay. it comes 16 years after they were first charged in the worst terror attack in u.s. history. >> reporter: today, the self-confessed mastermind of the 9/11 attacks and two accomplices are expected to enter a plea deal with the u.s. military. according to officials, the th plead guilty to some unspecified charges as early as next week at guantanamo bay.

"the new york times" citing a letter from prosecutors to 9/11 families, not independently verified by nbc news, reports the men have agreed to plead guilty to conspiracy and murder charges, in exchange for a life sentence, avoiding a death penalty trial at guantanamo, where they were first charged by the military in 2008. once the number three man in al qaeda, khalid sheikh mohammad, known as ksm, was captured by u.s. forces in pakistan in 2003. four years later he testified that he was responsible for the 9/11 operation from "a" to "z," as well as the first attack on the world trade center in 1993. according to a 2014 senate intelligence committee report, the cia waterboarded mohammad 183 times, a now-outlawed technique widely considered torture. also entering the plea agreement, ksm's accomplice, al zauy. the fbi says he was the main money man, sending credit cards and tens of thousands of dollars

to the hijackers. the third defendant was a former body guard for osama bin laden and is suspected by the fbi of planning the attack on the "uss cole" in 2000 that killed 17 american sailors. ashley bizman was just 16 when she lost her father on 9/11. she says the suspected plea deal does not seem like justice. >> the saying with 9/11 is "never forget," and unfortunately, the victims were forgotten today. >> house speaker mike johnson is denouncing the plea deal as a slap in the face to the 9/11 families. savannah? >> all right, andrea mitchell in washington. thank you. let's turn now to the breaking news we mentioned at the top of the show. sources telling nbc news that a landmark multi-nation prisoner swap is under way. it involves the u.s., russia and other countries. nbc's chief foreign correspondent keir simmons is following this for us. tell us about the late-breaking details.

>> reporter: well, hoda, that's right. this is moving fast this morning. and it is fraught. but it does look like a major exchange of prisoners between america and russia. we can tell you there's a group of american prisoners being swapped for russians right now. who are they? there are a number of americans in russian custody. some of them very high profile cases, including "wall street journal" reporter evan ger show vich who we saw in a russian court just a few weeks ago and businessman paul whelan who was convicted of espionage. both wrongly held. breaking news this morning, a landmark prisoner exchange under way. a group being released in exchange for russian political prisoners. the delicate operation starting this morning. a senior administration official telling nbc news the parties agreed to a prisoner transfer and they are now in a position where they're expected to soon be in u.s. custody. currently in custody in russia,

"wall street journal" reporter evan gershkovich, convicted of espionage just weeks ago after a trial the u.s. called a scam. his family who have been keeping their hopes up, pushing for his release. >> we're keeping ourselves optimistic. that's the best way we can cope with it. no pessimism. pessimism will kill all the hope. >> as has the family of paul whelan in a russian prison since 2018. >> we want him to come home. >> calling for his release since the release of brittney griner in december of 2022 after being held for 10 months. now all the families of american prisoners waiting with anxiety and hope. and if gershkovich and whelan are along the group, that's incredible news for their families and others who are still waiting. but remember, diplomatic relations between the u.s. and

so there are air quality advisories out from portland to los angeles, albuquerque, to oklahoma city, on into st. louis and further points to the east. we are also looking at extreme heat continuing from the pacific northwest into the south and on into the northeast, as well, for 139 million people. the heat continues, triple-digit heat with heat indexes, well over 100 degrees from jackson, nashville, washington, d.c., and charleston. tomorrow, more of the same. we're looking at those heat conditions continuing. and we are going to be looking into the weekend with more problems. we're talking about temperatures that are going to be triple digits for dallas, boise, 90s, and then, guess what, next week, no relief in sight. hotter than average for most of the country. and we're watching a tropical system that's going to be developing down around the puerto rico area. we'll have details on that coming up in the next half hour. but we're going to get to your local forecast in the next 30 seconds.

creek. this is where a deadly early morning crash is creating a big traffic problem along the main corridor today in the bay's bob redell live for us. there at the scene this morning. so, bob, what is the latest on that cleanup? well, you can see the cars have been removed and the young woman who was killed, coroner already came and removed her as well. but there are still a power pole in the middle of the ignacio valley road between civic and broadway here in walnut creek, which is shut down because of this horrific crash last night. walnut creek police tell me that around one this morning, the young woman she was 18 years old, was driving another 18 year old, a man from pittsburgh, where, according to police, they had been drinking. they were headed to the man's home in danville. she was going around 90 miles an hour, according to police, when she lost control, crossed center divide, hit a power pole in the opposite direction. police say she wasn't wearing a seat belt. ejected. died here at the scene. her passenger was wearing a seat belt. he got on his own, was taken to hospital and is

gold, as they both have done before, it would be another headline in olympic history. >> want to know what i would do if i didn't win. i guess we'll never know. >> straight off their gold medal win in the women's gymnastics team final. >> team usa! wins team finals at the olympic games. >> reporter: simone biles and suni lee will now compete against each other in the all-around final, an american has won gold in this event at each of the last five olympics, but this is the first time in the history of the sport that two former champions will go head-to-head. simone won in 2016 and suni in 2021, following simone's exit from the tokyo games as she experienced the twisties. for both women, the road to paris has been challenging. suni lee was diagnosed with two kidney diseases last year. >> a year ago, i didn't even

think this was -- >> she was on bedrest for weeks, her body swollen, weak, and exhausted. after five months of recovery, she fought her way back to another olympic squad! >> you clawed your way back to the mountaintop. how does it feel to be on top again? >> oh, my gosh, it feels absolutely insane. there were so many times when i thought about quitting and just giving up, because i was so sick. but once i had those people around me who lifted me up and supported me, i knew that this was something that i wanted. >> reporter: for simone, this is a return to the olympic stage on her own terms, after taking two years off post-tokyo to focus on her mental health. >> one day, i just woke up and i was like, okay, let's try this again. >> do you feel like you have something to prove? >> i always say "no," but i would say the only thing i have to prove is to myself, that i can get out there and do it again. >> and? what do we think? >> i think we're going to get

the job done. >> reporter: there will be 24 women competing in the all-around final. and the buggest threat to simone and suni, that's brazil's rebekah androji. she scored higher than simone during the team event on the bars and the vault. but you know, team usa never backs down from a challenge, guys. >> you know we don't, kaylee. no matter what happens, tonight is going to be absolutely epic and historic. let's talk more about this with our commentator and 2008 silver medalist, team usa, samantha peshick. is a man that you're at bercy arena. it's so good to see you there. this is going to be epic, as we said. we have simone. we have suni and we've got a really talented field. but i got to say the margin for error is so tiny in the all around. tell us what you expect from simone. >> well, i expect similar difficulty that we've seen. the skills that she's doing,

there's no one else in the entire world that's doing the skills at the level that she's been able to perform them. she has skills named after her and overall, she's just been so incredible and so consistent throughout this entire game so far. >> and sam, she's doing most of the events, because she's so good at everything. suni's got two key events, it was the uneven bars and the beam. what do you expect from her, because she's a real goal gold contender, too. >> yeah, i mean, her whole entire story, i get chills thinking about it, that story of resilience and coming back and her just being here, being able to compete in terms of her health is a story on its own, but she's a contender. and she is a fighter, and such an athlete, especially on bars. so her routine is incredibly difficult. she connects most of her elements and she's going to -- assuming that she puts it all together is certainly in medal contention.

>> so, samantha, it would seem as if obviously simone and suni are the favorites here, but let's talk about brazil's rebecca indrogi. we just heard kaylee represent reference her. she's been outside the american gymnast, the most impressive. do we think she poses a real threat tonight, samantha, or no? >> you know, she does. she has incredible power, incredible strength, and she has a lot of the difficulty that simone has. and we heard that she submitted a new element on vault. we're not sure if she's going to do it or not, but it would be named after her if she were able to do this triple twist, which would increase her difficulty and close the margin between her and simone. now, assuming that everything goes as planned with simone, she's pretty hard to beat, so i don't see it as a real threat, but if there's a mistake or uncertainty there, then she is in the mix. >> yeah, we're not going to see jordan tonight. we're going to see her later, but i think what's so cool is,

we've been at these events, samantha, and the place is really explosive. there's so much cheering and stuff going on. they also have celebrities in the house that the girls seem to acknowledge as they're going about their business. >> like snoop. >> like snoop. how is this all playing into their performance? >> i don't think it's a problem. i actually think it's helpful, because the more that they're loose and having fun, they've said that that's how they do their best gymnastics, which is very unique from past olympic teams and the culture of usa gymnastics. so being able to watch them compete and during the meet, stay loose, dance around, look at snoop dogg, wave to their families, and still have so much success, i think that's just so positive for the sport of gymnastics. >> samantha, it sure is. we cannot wait. we'll be there too in that number. and of course, you can catch all of the action tonight, live on peaco*ck and prime-time right here on nbc. we look forward to your commentary, samantha. >> you've got to save your voice for tonight. pace yourself.

indian heritage. i didn't know she was black, until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black. now she wants to be known as plaque. black. so i don't know. is she indian or is she black? >> reporter: this interview at national association of black journalist conferences in chicago was contentious from the very first question, which trump described as horrible and disgraceful. for her part, the vice president largely shrugged off the remarks, telling an historically black sorority conference in houston overnight that she saw this as, quote, the same old show from trump, and quote, the american people deserve better. trump's allies argued that he looked strong by facing tough questions, but his controversial answers have left many other republicans frustrated, as the party continues to struggle to recalibrate to face a surging kamala harris, not joe biden, in november. hoda? >> all right. garrett haake for us there at the capitol, thank you. the transportation department is proposing a new rule that would require airlines to seat families together.

it would also ban so-called junk fees associated with family seating. nbc's tom costello covers aviation for us. tom, how would this rule work and how do they get it across the finish line? >> reporter: yeah, savannah, good morning. this is a proposed rule and essentially it would require the airlines to seat families together in adjacent seating when the children are 13 and under and it would ban the junk fees, according to the d.o.t., associated with that. in other words, you can't charge a family more money, just to seat them together. the transportation secretary pete buttigieg says this should save the average family of four as much as $ many airlines still don't guarantee family seating, which means parents may have to pay more to keep their kids with them. and parents often need to help kids with seat belts, going to the restroom, keeping them calm. and they're often left asking another passenger if they would swap seats so they could stay with their kids. the d.o.t., by the way, has a dashboard on its website, listing which airlines ban those extra fees and which don't.

so here's how this would work. the new rule would ban so-called seating junk fees, require adjacent family seating when available, regardless of class, within 48 hours of booking. and if adjacent seats are not available, the airlines would be required to offer refunds or re-book families for free. so we're still waiting for an official response from the airlines. this is just coming out. the proposed rule, this is only a proposed rule, has to go through a lengthy rule-making process before it actually becomes a formal rule that the airlines would need to comply with. savannah? >> tom costello, thank you! let's turn back to the olympics now, and another historic night for american katie ledecky. the legendary swimmer padding her already incredible resume with yet another gold medal. it was just one of many highlights during an action-packed day at these games. and nbc's tom llamas joins us now once again with a closer look. tom, good morning.

♪ welcome back. every day, we get to enjoy this breathtaking view, right from our set, looking out on the eiffel tower, but the real action is actually taking place beneath that iconic landmark. >> yeah, we can hear it right now. that is where beach volleyball happens. yesterday we looked at the schedule and we realize the u.s. were playing at 3:00 local time. here is the problem. our show ends at 3:00 local time. >> keep in mind, the matches, they only run about 45 minutes. and we are two miles away, but also a lot of traffic away. so the question is this, could we make it in time? challenge accepted. >> let's go. let's go. let's go. beach volleyball, baby. >> at the very moment u.s. women's beach volleyball superstar duo chang and hughes

were taking the olympic sand against france -- we had just wrapped our show. savannah, al and i were still running to the car from our set, which is two miles away from the venue. the seating capacity of more than 14,000, the temporary stadium underneath the eiffel tower is a crown jewel of the paris venues. and a hot ticket for its iconic location and party vibe. but two miles is 30 minutes in olympic size traffic. so by the time we arrived -- >> oh, it's hot. time for beach volleyball. >> wait. wait for me. wait for me. >> our fast walk had turned into a full-on sprint. >> slow. >> let's go. >> you guys, let's go. >> meanwhile, team usa was tied up with france with just a few points to go. did we mention, the beach volleyball court is not near the entrance? >> set our timers. luckily we sent our snoop dogg ahead of us. we could hear the cheers as we raced up the staircase. team france had tied it up,

19-19. and the hometown crowd was going wild. and we had to make sure the ladies of team usa knew we were representing. >> yeah! >> yes! >> by the way, as it turns out, the french love to do the wave. even a slow-mo version, but we were all about bringing the energy. >> usa, usa! >> and then the second set point went to a third match point. and a block from hughes sealed the u.s. victory. >> yes, yes! >> we celebrated with snoop and all of our fellow americans in the crowd. and then we hugged it out with stars of the hour, kelly cheng and sara hughes. >> oh my god. okay. y'all made us wait until the last second to pull that one off. how was it out there? >> it was entertaining. >> we were entertained. >> how was it out there, guys? >> it was toasty. >> it was hot.

good morning. it is 856. i'm kris sanchez, a major traffic corridor in walnut creek is expected to remain closed for hours after an early morning crash involving a drunk driver. two people were in that speeding car that lost control on ignacio valley road, near civic. the driver of that car then smashed into a utility pole, and the driver, an 18 year old woman, died at the scene. police say she was not wearing a seatbelt. her passenger was wearing a seat belt and walked away from the crash, but was later taken to the hospital. both directions of ignacio valley remain closed near civic. some nearby customers are also without power. we are working right now to learn the size of the outage to learn the size of the outage and the estimated tim fore introducing togo's new barbecue beef sandwich.
