Applied Energistics 2’s Channels

Networks without an ME Controller are considered Ad-Hoc and can support up to 8 channels of device usage. When you exceed 8 devices, the network channel using the device turns off, you can remove the device or add a ME Controller.
While using an Ad-Hoc network, each device will use 1 wide network, which is very different from how the ME Controller allocates channels based on the shortest route.
Channels will consume 1⁄128 ae/t per node they traverse, this means that by adding a ME Controller for a network of 8 devices and 96+ nodes, your power usage can really reduce power consumption because it changes the way channels are allocated.
Channels must route through the shortest path from the ME Controller to the device, when using the ME Controller. If the path has been maximized, some devices may not receive the necessary channels, use color cables, cable anchors and tunnels to make sure your channels follow the path you want .
Channel mode
In Minecraft version 1.18, AE2 10.0.0 introduces new options to change the way AE2 channels work in your world. There is a new configuration option in the general section (channels) that controls this, and a new in-game command for the operator to change modes and profiles from within the game.
The command is:
/ae2 channelmode <mode>: to change it
/ae2 channelmode: to display the current mode.
All existing grids will restart when the mode is changed in-game, and use the new mode immediately.
This revives and improves upon options available in Minecraft 1.12 and introduces better options for players who just want to play the game a little more comfortably but don’t want to get rid of the mechanics entirely.

Design

Using P2P Tunnel to adjust route length
You can see that the p2p tunnel is directly on the machine block at the bottom of the setup and directly on the controller, this is done because the in and out tunnels are both considered “one node”, so , two cables from the controller and balanced in and out tunnels to create the final balanced setup.
